“How to Install a Trunk Weatherstrip”
There are three types at least in the GM models and we will talk about all three types.
1. The clip type trunk weatherstrip.
2. The channel type trunk weatherstrip.
3. The lip type trunk weatherstrip.
The Clip Type Trunk Weatherstrip
They used this back in the 50′s this is like the door weatherstrips has a clip and there are holes in the trunk lid for the clips to go into. Fairly easy take a clip tool and take out the old trunk weatherstrip and replace it with the new one. If you don’t have a clip to just rip it out and you cut the clips off with some side cutters.
The Channel Type Trunk Weatherstrip
This trunk weatherstrip will take a little more time. There is a lot more cleaning with this trunk weatherstrip. This type starts in the late 58 to around the mid 70′s (75-77) depending on which model. So let’s get started there is no easy way the take out the old trunk weatherstrip so I just rip out the best I can after that I usually take a flat head screw driver and so adhesive cleaner a get it clean the best I can then I use a tooth brush and some adhesive cleaner to get the rest. This needs to be really clean so you have a great seal. Tip: the trunk weatherstrip has a profile to it and you need to look at that before you install. It reminds me of a wave pushing toward the beach. Well the top part needs to be pushing toward the trunk or the curved part goes to center of the trunk. You can put this in wrong so beware. Next step is to put the trunk weatherstrip in. You start at the bottom in the middle were the trunk lock is. These trunk weatherstrip that we sell are cut to fit and you will have enough plus. Reason I am saying this; I don’t want you to stretch the trunk weatherstrip when you are place in the channel. So here we go place a nice bead of (black) weatherstrip adhesive around the channel and start feeding the trunk weatherstrip. Get one side and use a paint stirrer (wooden) to push in the other side work your way around to you meet the other end cut the trunk weatherstrip and you are done.
The Lip Type Trunk Weatherstrip
This profile is used in 77-91 years and it is thicker, heavier, and has metal in with the rubber. This is not a big job. Find the end or pull a corner up off the lip and I use a round metal rod or a screw driver place it under the trunk weatherstrip and you can put your hands on both sides and push off the trunk weatherstrip. That’s if you can’t just pull it off. Once it’s off clean off the weatherstrip adhesive with the weatherstrip adhesive cleaner. To put it back on put a thin layer of weatherstrip adhesive on the lip and you start at the bottom were the lock is and work it around until you meet the other end. Always put the open end to the bottom. Cut it to fit and the trunk weatherstrip is done.
